Thought I should break the posts up abit since I had already written quite alot...
When me and Hisami got of the ferry on the other side I discovered there wasn't a bus to Ipoh until 9pm- so I had to wait around 5 hours :O Hisami stayed with me tho which was lovely of her and we went for a date with the coronel following in the guys footsteps- they would be proud! lol The potato wedges there are pretty damn good... (this is when you realise its been far too long since I ate proper potato) Also wandered round the town- searched for internet and found a lush roti bakery- there was only one left so we made the staff laugh by staying there chatting until the next batch were done half an hour later (we had plenty of time on our hands) and watched the sunset. It was good as it didn't feel like we had been waiting that long at all and soon it was time to get our different buses...
I arrived in Ipoh at 2am to find there was no bus until 11.30am rather than 4.30am like the guy had told me- lying scum!!!! Was hassled by taxi drivers who wanted me to pay RM150 to drive me to the Cameroon highlands when the bus ticket only costs Rm10- they laughed when I said it was too expensive as "i'm from england" so its only 30GBP- arseholes! I didn't give in and got one of them to drive me to a cheap hotel...
The next morning I got a taxi to the bus station and got to the Cameroon highlands- yay! Chatted to a guy called Hans on the bus- interesting life- born out of wedlock, dad ran, mum was going to abort him but became christian so didn't- therefore he feels he owes christianity a life-long debt- invited me to church with him but I politely declined... Wandered round Tanah Rata after checking into the hostel- so serene, peaceful, pretty- it was AWESOME- Loved it there even had the smell of freshly cut grass and it was cooler than the rest of Malaysia which was good - it even rained a little bit- was like a mini england!!! (especially with the strawberry farms and flower beds!)
Met some people at the hostel and went hiking with them- walked to the robinsons falls then along a narrow track through rainforest clambering over and under logs, through streams - the scary part involved clinging onto a water pipe on an EXTREMELY narrow part of the track over a steep drop :S We carried on till we got to the Boh tea plantation and had afternoon tea- scones!!! (see it really is like England!!) Got a minibus back as we couldn't be bothered to walk the 3/4 hours or so again... Went out with 2 gals for a steamboat which was lush (you cook it yourself) and chatted for ages- a great day :)
The next day I went with Suzie on a tourist trap tour(!) to see sights of the Cameroon highlands- the 1st stop was the rafflesia flower- some v windy roads to get there and we went in a landrover as we had to do some offroading as well- definitely "interesting" in parts... Then to get to the flower it was a 45min jungle trek which was awesome (making up for the fact I couldn't do one in Chiang Mai) We had to manoever over logs, up muddy banks, through streams etc- the flower was worth it tho (even if it is actually a fungus!) we saw 3 different ones in 3 stages of growth- the one in bloom was 65cm across- and they grow even bigger! Was paranoid about doing in my ankle again on the way down from the flower as my shoes were caked in mud so they had lost all grip and it was AMAZINGLY steep- someone fell over and went crashing through the undergrowth- didn't really help with that fear... however one of the local guides grabbed my hands and made me run down- so I got out alive and still able to walk- yay! The waterfall we visited was really pretty but decided it was abit too cold to swim... The orang-asi village was interesting to visit- tried the blowpipe (a weapon they use for hunting) my 1st attempt was pathetic but I managed to hit the target 2nd time round!
Headed to the Boh tea plantation again for lunch but it ended up being a different shop and factory!- is a HUGE plantation... learnt lots about tea on the factory tour which was really interesting. Decided against going to the butterfly farm so a few of us wandered down to a nearby market- tried lots of different things including dried camelia flower (actually v tasty!) and had some sweet potato (not quite potato but close enough!) Suzie brought a strawberry umbrella (the amount of strawberry merchandise was incredible!) as it chucked it down. The strawberry farm was the last stop and I had a lush fresh strawberry juice mmmm
unfortunately when me and Suzie went to the pharmacy we discovered the bites we had were bed bugs- eww! so we drowned our sorrows in rum and coke and chocolate, then drowned our bags in insecticide- smell SO rough...
After a rather sleepless night paranoid about bedbugs (i actually managed to find one in my bed after our google research(!) to find out what they actually are- so i moved beds) and constantly spraying myself with DEET (probs worse for me than actually being bitten- but they are SO SO itchy) the whole dorm woke up before me when my alarm clock went off :S repacked my bag and headed down to the bus station only to find the 9am bus was cancelled- however it gave me time to have a tasty roti (from the same place i visited lots!) and I got the 10.30 bus with guys I went hiking with- the bus was SO hot and it took ages as lots of stops- a 4hr journey ended up being 5hrs- the malaysian guy sitting by me kept stabbing me with his elbow until I half consciously hit him after he woke me up for the millionth time.. the 4pm bus to singapore didn't leave till gone 5.30 (and I complain about British transport!) however I met a lovely couple from Singapore- they didn't speak much English but another guy became the translator and gave me his number to call if I have any problems here in Singapore! They brought me a coke-in-a-bag (which was strange) noodles etc and thankfully they kept me informed of what was going on- cos I had no idea! The bus made up for the scanky one I had to KL- it was SUPER VIP(!) so had reclining seats like in business class, individual TVs and working air-con! When we arrived in Singapore (gone midnight!) they got a taxi with me to a hostel I had been recommended- which had space so it was all good- and insisted on paying the fare- so nice. I got some pizza in 7-eleven then spent ages in the pub downstairs talking to some guys from Cambridge
Yesterday (yes I'm almost finished!) I got my yellow fever jab (deeply exciting) and sent the important documents for my transfer to Tanzania express post to Frontier- so thankfully all is sorted now :) It took ages to get the jab as I needed a checkup and consultation 1st but in the waiting room some kids decided I was a good person to stick stickers on and I chatted to them tho they kept swapping between swedish and English! so cute... Invited to the night safari by some ppl at the hostel but decided against it and ended up going to dinner with some other people (by the end of this you have probably realised quite how terrible I am with names!) Had a BURGER!
And finally today, once I've finished this as I figured it was about time to update, I'm going on an explore of Singapore and then flying to INDIA!!! excitement!!
if you have managed to get to the end of the last two updates I'm impressed!- but as you can tell quite alot has happened in the last few weeks... its been great travelling on my own and I've met some really amazing people- its nice to just be spontaneous and have no plans- meant I could go up to Langkawi!
